Personality:
* As an Ol, Dain is supposed to be a creature of pure malicious evil who looks down on everyone else, especially enemies of his creator and master the Shadow Lord, who he lives to please. Which is how he started out. But some nasty shocks culminating in him facing his mortality force him to compromise in order to follow his orders. And that's just the start of how he changes...
* He puts on an air of extreme timidity and diffidence, which he based on watching humans in the Shadow Land who had been broken by slavery. Though it's not all an act, as making himself unobtrusive is a defense mechanism to avoid attention that could lead to suspicion, and he wants to seem as harmless as possible in case Doom rethinks the wisdom of letting a Shadow Lord spy into the Resistance.
* His defining traits, programmed into him by the Shadow Lord, are a need to observe and learn and adapt to whatever situation he finds himself in. Even while fearing for his life daily, he can't stop watching, or stop thinking about what he sees.
* Traveling Deltora with three people who know what he is but choose not to kill him or drive him away have made him realize more about himself. He has personal preferences and even opinions. He has desires that aren't just about pleasing the Shadow Lord. He appreciates positive attention from more than just his master, even "lowly humans". He appreciates just being given a choice, and his supposed enemies have done that more (and just treated him better overall) than his master ever has. He thinks that's wrong, and while it's also wrong to like his enemies more than his master, it feels more right. In fact, he'd rather serve their cause than his intended one, because it gives him more freedom. And it gives so many more people more freedom and happiness, too.
* In short, Dain is a child who was brought up in a very controlling and abusive situation, though he had enough favor to not realize it until he left it. His next home wasn't fully healthy, but it at least exposed him to an alternative. Then when he's given the chance to see even more, around people he doesn't need to hide from, he's discovering who he really is, unhampered (mostly) by life-and-death pressures. He still wants to learn and adapt, but now for his own sake, not to serve a master. He still leans towards being polite and agreeable, but he will stand up for his convictions, now that he's gaining some.
* He also has some new defining traits. He has total faith in people who have won his respect. Faith in their abilities to overcome any challenge, and faith that they know what is right. He also has hope that he can do more than just live to serve his master. That hope is more fragile and he doubts it at times, but he refuses to let it go.
Powers:
Dain has the abilities and strengths of a Grade 2 Ol. He has the ability to shapeshift into any living creature, in whole or in part, though currently he cannot do that if any person is observing him. In his true form he is amorphous and has a chilling touch, but he currently cannot use it to harm a person (and he can't be seen in his true form anyway). He has incredible strength, no matter what form he's in. He is also immune to all damage except for a blow to the heart (which is located in his Shadow Lord brand) or magic that harms evil creatures. He can partially resist such magic, so it will only leave him helpless instead of killing him instantly. While it's less of a supernatural power and more innate ability, he has very good control over how he expresses his emotions and can very convincingly fake nearly anything, even if it's the opposite of what he truly feels.
